Torment, a Diablo III rebuild of Wrath of the Lich King, opens its alpha to testers

Torment rebuilds World of Warcraft 3.3.5a as Diablo III. Its solo developer opened the alpha to testers on 1 October 2026, a day after announcing the alpha phase, and asked on Reddit for players willing to help.
"Not WoW with some Diablo items on top," the developer wrote. "I've replaced WoW's combat, classes, loot and difficulty with Diablo 3's own systems."
What you can play now
- Two classes: the Barbarian, played on a Warrior, with 23 skills, 115 runes and 19 passives, and the Wizard, played on a Mage, with 26 skills, 130 runes and 18 passives
- Diablo III's damage model, resources and proc coefficients, with passives, gear and Paragon in place of WoW talents
- Characters start at level 70 in the hub with 200 Paragon, starter gear and a coffer of gold and materials, so you can try builds without farming first
- Nephalem Rifts with Rift Guardians, elite packs with Diablo III affixes such as Molten, Jailer and Waller, and difficulties from Normal to Torment VI
- Items with rolled affixes, legendaries that drop unidentified, and an account-wide stash. The Mystic re-enchants gear and the Jeweler handles gems
- Monsters ignore WoW's threat system and pick their targets the way Diablo monsters do
Helping with the alpha
Testers get a Tester role on the Torment Discord and access to a bounty board that lists what needs testing. You claim a task for an hour, test it and send in a report. The developer plans some kind of cosmetic reward for testers. All characters are test data and will be wiped before the full release, and there is no release date.
What comes next
Next on the list are Greater Rifts, legendary potions and gems, and legendary and set effects on gear. For the beta the developer plans the remaining Diablo III classes, Torment VII to XVI and a Hardcore realm, with seasonal realms later. By the end of beta the campaign should tell Diablo's story across reworked Azeroth zones, with levelling from 1 to 70.
The first patches
Patch 0.1.1 on 2 October let every race play both classes, made the Jeweler Covetous Shen and gave the character sheet Diablo III's layout, with five cosmetic slots. Patch 0.1.2 on 4 October added a Blacksmith that forges weapons and armour, and gave the Wizard Teleport - Reversal.
