Classic+ servers keep the old world and client but change the game: new zones and quests, playable High Elves and Goblins, classless characters, five-player raids, rogue-lite runs or seasonal progression. They are the most creative part of the scene and, since 2026, also the most turbulent, after Turtle WoW, Stormforge and Ascension closed following Blizzard's legal action.

        Closed servers

        These servers have shut down. Their pages stay up with their history and the news about what happened, and the closed servers page has what we know about when and why each one closed.

        How this ranking works

        Every active server gets a score out of 100 from three parts. Player reviews count for 50%. They are the star ratings of registered players, weighted so that a server with only a few reviews stays close to the average of all Classic+ and custom servers until more players have rated it. Population counts for 35%, on a logarithmic scale so a 10,000-player network doesn't bury every smaller realm. Track record counts for 15% and measures how long the server has been running, up to five years.

        Population figures are estimates from the servers and their communities, and a server without one gets no points for population. Servers that haven't launched and closed servers are listed separately. Nothing on this page is paid placement.

        What to look for

        Read the feature list first

        Custom servers differ enormously. A classless server, a rogue-lite run system and a Vanilla+ world with new quests are three different games that happen to share a client.

        Community and roadmap

        Because these projects write their own content, the size of the team and the pace of updates matter more than for blizzlike realms. The news section tracks launches, phases and roadmaps.

        Legal risk is real

        The three biggest custom projects shut down in 2026. It is worth keeping this in mind before investing months into a character on any custom server.

        Frequently asked questions

        What is a Classic+ server?

        A Classic+ server uses the Vanilla (or occasionally Wrath) client and world but adds original content: new zones, dungeons, raids, races, class changes or progression systems. It is the fan-made version of the Classic+ idea Blizzard has discussed for years. Right now our Classic+ and custom ranking is led by Warmane - Onyxia, Sirus WoW and Capybara Paradise.

        What replaced Turtle WoW?

        After Turtle WoW closed in May 2026, community projects such as OctoWoW continued its Mysteries of Azeroth content, while Project Legacy and Greyhaven launched as new Vanilla+ and progressive Vanilla realms.
