Vanilla is where the private-server scene started, and it is still the most crowded category. The servers below run the original 1.12 client: some are strict blizzlike x1 realms that replay the 2004-2006 patch timeline, others are Vanilla+ projects that keep the world and level 60 cap but add new quests, zones, races or class changes.

Servers are ranked by player reviews on Private Server Hub, estimated population and how long they have been running. Reviews cover stability, scripting quality, updates and fixes, community, staff support and custom features.

        How this ranking works

        Every active server gets a score out of 100 from three parts. Player reviews count for 50%. They are the star ratings of registered players, weighted so that a server with only a few reviews stays close to the average of all Vanilla servers until more players have rated it. Population counts for 35%, on a logarithmic scale so a 10,000-player network doesn't bury every smaller realm. Track record counts for 15% and measures how long the server has been running, up to five years.

        Population figures are estimates from the servers and their communities, and a server without one gets no points for population. Servers that haven't launched and closed servers are listed separately. Nothing on this page is paid placement.

        What to look for

        Blizzlike or Vanilla+

        If you want the game exactly as it was, look for the Blizzlike tag and x1 rates. If you have already done Naxxramas three times, a Vanilla+ server with new content will keep things fresh.

        Fresh realm timing

        Vanilla is best when everyone levels together. Check the online-since date and the news section: a realm that launched in the last few months has a healthy low-level population.

        Population honesty

        Our population column is an estimate from the server and the community. A realm listed at 300-400 players feels very different from one at 5,000, especially for dungeons and the auction house.

        The ranking above combines player reviews, population and track record, and right now it is led by Everlook, Capybara Paradise and GeekServers - NostalGeek. Kronos (Twinstar) and Everlook are the reference blizzlike x1 realms, while Vanilla+ projects are the pick when players want new content on the classic 1.12 client.

        What happened to Turtle WoW?

        Turtle WoW, the largest Vanilla+ server, shut down on 15 May 2026 after a settlement with Blizzard. It is still listed for reference and marked Closed. Community successors such as OctoWoW continue its Mysteries of Azeroth content.

        Do I need a special client for Vanilla private servers?

        You need the 1.12.1 game client. Most servers link a download on their website and provide a realmlist address or a launcher; a few also support the 1.14 Classic Era client.
