Project Astral shuts down on 10 October and plans a Season 1 relaunch

Project Astral, a custom Wrath of the Lich King server that opened on 4 September 2026, is shutting its realm down on Saturday, 10 October. Its lead developer announced the decision on the project's Discord, and a player reposted the announcement on r/wowservers on 7 October. In its five weeks the realm got as far as Molten Core, which opened on 12 September, with a Mythic version from 27 September.

Why it is closing

The player count has dropped since Blizzard's WoW: Forever beta opened on 17 September. Astral started with around 400 to 500 players and has settled at 100 to 150, which the team says makes raids, and Dungeon Browser groups in particular, much harder to fill. It also blames a lack of new content and existing bugs, and doesn't expect the next weeks to help, with Forever launching on 4 November and GTA 6 on 19 November. Astral isn't the first to feel it. Project Alterac also named the Forever beta among its reasons for closing in September.

On top of that, the developer found what they call fundamental design problems in the Astral Tree, the server's passive tree of percentage stat bonuses and quality-of-life unlocks. The problems turned up during work on the latest balance patch and a planned gem balance update. Every gear update would mean nerfing classes further while raising boss damage and health again. Shamans and Paladins were nerfed first, then Death Knights and Paladins, and now Paladins again. In the end, the announcement says, balance would come down to players barely taking damage or players getting one-shot.

Rebuilding the tree from the ground up would take weeks or months with no new content in the meantime. With players already leaving, the developer expects the realm would drop below the number needed for raids and dungeon groups, so they decided to close it now. "We need to pull the ripcord now, before it is too late," the announcement says.

What happens next

• The developer will back up the whole database after the shutdown
• The team will rework the Astral Tree, fix the proc engine and build the content planned for Season 1
• Project Astral will come back straight into Season 1. There is no date yet, and the announcement doesn't say whether characters carry over
• The donation link is gone. Anyone who donated can open a ticket with their name and invoice number and get a refund through PayPal
