ChromieCraft lets players export their characters to keep forever

ChromieCraft, the progressive WotLK server run by the AzerothCore team, added a free character export on 25 October 2026. Players can now download their characters from the account manager and load them into their own copy of AzerothCore, the open-source core the server runs on. The team says it wants players to be able to keep their characters forever, even if a server shuts down.
How the export works
- In the character list of the account manager, click export and confirm, and a player dump (pdump) file downloads
- One character can be exported once a month, and a whole account once every 3 months
- Personal data is removed from the file when it is made
- Horde characters load in Orgrimmar and Alliance characters in Stormwind
- Characters of any other race or faction load in Booty Bay, so they also work on AzerothCore servers that add classes through modules
ChromieCraft links a guide for setting up AzerothCore at home, and the code behind the feature is public on GitHub.
Why ChromieCraft did it
The post marks ten years of AzerothCore, which started in mid-2016. ChromieCraft opened in December 2020 to develop the core in the open, so every fix reaches the whole community instead of disappearing when a closed project shuts down. The team writes that the hours and memories players put into their characters are lost the same way when a server closes. This year alone, Turtle WoW closed in May and Ascension in September.
