Gemstone WoW gives its bots AI chat and their own backstories

Gemstone WoW, a free Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a server that opened in January 2026, released a major content patch on 9 February 2026. Most of it fixed classes, raids and arenas, but the bot changes stood out.

Bots that talk

  • Bots reply to players in /say, whispers and party chat with AI-written answers
  • They know they are on Gemstone WoW and can tell you your own level and class
  • Each bot has its own backstory, location and join date
  • Only one or two bots answer any single message
  • Logins get a welcome announcement: "[GemstoneWoW] PlayerName has logged in. Welcome!"

Earlier patches had already worked on how bots behave. On 28 January they started jumping now and then while following a player, which the notes say makes them look more human. On 12 March their chat got faster replies, with the artificial delays removed, and a rewritten style with "subtle typos".

Who runs it

The owner describes Gemstone as a hobby project worked on in free time. It has no shop, its game servers are in Singapore, and in its first months patch notes came out almost every week.

In early October 2026 the online counter on the Gemstone site showed about 4,000 online. The server doesn’t say how many of them are bots, but a May 2026 patch note mentions "thousands of bots".
