OctoWoW emerges as a community-run successor to Turtle WoW

OctoWoW emerges as a community-run successor to Turtle WoW

On 22 June 2026 Massively Overpowered reported on OctoWoW, a new rogue-server spinoff that picks up where Turtle WoW left off. Built on a Turtle WoW-derived 1.12.1 core, the project continues the custom "Mysteries of Azeroth" storyline and was still described as a beta at the time.

What OctoWoW offers

  • Playable High Elves and Goblins and new race/class combinations
  • Additional professions and updated classic dungeons and raids
  • A posted roadmap with more dungeons and raids and a dedicated PvP realm
  • Three realms: N'Zoth (PvE), C'Thun (hardcore PvE) and Y'Shaarj (PvP), the last of which opened on 30 June 2026

Who runs it

The beta announcement stated that the developers are not the former Turtle WoW staff, who now operate as Moonwhisper Games, and that contributors work under a "security principle" in which they do not know one another's real identities. Independent trackers note that the project's Classic+ content was made possible by a leak of Turtle WoW's code repository in 2024.

Reception

OctoWoW's community hub Discord grew to roughly 4,700 members over the summer, and YouTube creators quickly framed it as "the new Turtle WoW." Whether it can avoid the legal fate of its predecessor remains an open question.
